What is a UPC barcode?

Universal Product Codes, simply known as UPC, is a 12-digit number used to represent and track your music as an entire physical or digital product different from ISRC code which represents individual tracks or sound recordings.

If you’re asking yourself, ‘ do I need a UPC code ’ then the answer is yes. It is really important to have one to track your sales from your record as a CD in a shop or as a digital version.

Every release (single/EP/album) requires a unique barcode, for physical copies, there will be a barcode graphic used which is usually placed on the back of a CD. When it comes to digital releases the UPC number is the number used to track sales.

UPC codes are required for Nielsen SoundScan tracking, which is how Billboard counts sales in their charts.
